Alumni Honor Dr. Jimmy Simon
More than 75 House Staff alumni in pediatrics gathered last fall to celebrate Dr. Jimmy Simon, professor and chair emeritus of pediatrics, and to raise money for a good cause – the Jimmy L. Simon, MD Fund at the School of Medicine.
The two-day tribute allowed alumni to express their gratitude for Simon’s role in their education and their careers. In Simon’s honor, alumni contributed more than $160,000 to the Simon Fund, which supports pediatric residency education.
Simon served as professor and chair of pediatrics from 1974 to 1996 before accepting his emeritus role. He won numerous awards at the school, including honors for clinical teaching in 1976, ’83, ’84, ’86, ’90 and ’94. In 2000, he was presented the Clifford G. Grulee Award for outstanding service to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Simon also was instrumental in working with members of the Brenner family of Winston-Salem to establish Brenner Children’s Hospital at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
